Rattan and Cane

I vividly remember growing up sitting at my grandparents kitchen table in their rattan chairs (I called them their straw chairs as a kid!). Rattan and cane furniture were THE items to have in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. They wound up disposing of the chairs when they moved because in the mid 2000’s they were considered outdated. If you’ve been browsing AD, Elle Décor, or any other design media publication in the last few years you may have seen more rattan and cane pieces than usual- that’s because they’ve been making a comeback and they’re here to stay! Both rattan and cane come from the rattan palm plant which is native to Asia and Africa. One of the only downfalls of having rattan and cane furniture is that if you don’t purchase from a reputable company it can be more fragile than durable. I’ve created a list of pieces that are high quality for you:

Janus et Cie does it again. I’ve spoken about this company on the blog before - they are experts in the outdoor furniture game. You will notice that their prices are a little on the higher end but you are paying for quality which is extremely important, especially when you’re purchasing rattan furniture. Janus et Cies Wing Rattan Armchair (pictured in Sequoia) is the perfect addition to your space. Each chair is woven by hand by experienced artisans so you know the chair will last and wing chairs are some of the most comfortable with their high backs and arms.

Looking to add a textured piece to your room but limited on space? The CB2 Feliz Rattan Bar Cart is the perfect solution. The beauty of rattan is that it can be used in almost any style of room. Whether it’s mid-century modern, postmodern, minimalist, or even contemporary, rattan works in almost any space. If you’re not a drinker, this bar cart is perfect to display plants.

I love working with a cane or rattan bed because between the bed frame, comforter, and pillows you can mix lots of different patterns and textures. The Dolores Cane Platform Bed from Pottery Barn comes in 3 different finishes and if you are ordering a queen or king the 3-paneled headboard and footboard are visually pleasing. This texture of this bed would be complimented by a mix of linen and velvet throw pillows.

The Fields Cane Accent Chair from the Leanne Ford and Crate & Barrel collaboration is a crowd pleaser (some colors are on back-order!) I find chairs with this silhouette (think elevated barrel chair) very comforting and inviting because of their curved backs. This chair is also FSC certified so you can feel good about purchasing (and sitting) in it!

The Candra Black Sideboard by Article caught my eye because of its unique shape. This coastal sideboard will stand out in any room due to its shape and the pleasant contrast between the dark wood and off-white rattan woven pattern. If you have a room that has a lot of sharp edges this piece will soften up the space.

I like working with pieces of furniture that can work in multiple styles of rooms because it allows me to get more creative. The Lofted Rattan & Wood 6- Drawer Dresser by West Elm combines rattan, wood, and iron to create a unique look.
